その５　第４章　反捕鯨国が捕鯨再開に反対する三つの理由

 

 

　国際捕鯨委員会（IWC）で決めたモラトリアム（商業捕鯨の一時停止）は遅くとも１９９０年に見直すということになっていたのに、反捕鯨国の工作により、いまだに商業捕鯨再開のめどはたっていません。

　反捕鯨国が捕鯨再開に反対する一番の理由は、牛肉や豚肉の輸出国の利益のためです。強力な反捕鯨国がアメリカ、オーストラリア、ニュー人ランドという世界最大の畜肉生産国であることを見れば明らかです。

　二つ目の理由は、クジラは環境問題の象徴として政治的に利用されているということです。「けなげなクジラを食べるなんてかわいそう」という宣伝が、政治的に利用できるということです。アメリカはベトナム戦争での虐殺非難をかわす手段として、クジラを救えキャンペーンを行ったという事実を見ればわかります。

　３つ目の理由は、人種差別的な思想が背景にありそうだということです。「動物愛護」「資源保護」に反するクジラ殺しをする日本人！というプロパガンダが、反捕鯨国でなされているということです。

　しかし、動物愛護なら牛や豚を食べるのはよくてクジラはいけないなどということにはなりません。資源保護ということで言うと、今や捕鯨が禁止されているためにクジラの増えすぎのためにサンマ、タラ、イカなどをクジラが食べるようになり、これらの資源が大きく減少していることは前章で見た通りです。

　地球環境から見て決定的なのは、クジラは極めてエネルギー効率の良い食べ物である、という事実です。次の式が成り立つのです。

 

　＊鯨肉１キロカロリーを得るのに燃料１キロカロリーを消費

＊牛肉１キロカロリーを得るには、１２０キロの穀物を必要とする

　　　その穀物（主に小麦）１キロカロリーを生産するためには、燃料１０キロカロリーを

　　　必要とする

　　＊したがって、牛肉１キロカロリーを得るためには、１２０X10＝１２００キロカロリーが必要

＊結論：クジラは牛の１２００倍のエネルギー効率である。＝環境にやさしい。

 

日本は人種偏見を乗り越え、なんとしても捕鯨を守っていくべきなのです。

Three Reasons Anti-Whaling Nations Are Against The Resumption of Whaling

 

The moratorium (suspension) of commercial whaling adopted by the International Whaling Commission (IWC) had a rider that the suspension needed to be reviewed by 1990, at the latest—and this has been scrupulously ignored. The resumption of commercial whaling is nowhere in sight and there are several reasons for this.

   One reason for this is the political-economic game that the anti-whaling countries–the US, Australia, and New Zealand–play, in that they are also major exporters of beef and pork. Their primary motivation is the sale of meat.

   One other reason is that whales are a convenient symbol of all environmental issues. Whales are the biggest mammals on earth. They flip their tails, females signal to their offspring and swim long distances. When people see whales, they reflexively respond with: “Eating such nice creatures is cruel and pitiful!” Naturally this is used as propaganda by anti-whaling countries to signal their “commitment” to the environment. This tactic was in fact used by the US during the Vietnam War—to distract the rest of the world from the horrible atrocities committed by the US military against the Vietnamese people.

Lastly, racism plays a role in the objection to whaling. For example, Yamamoto Shichihei stated in his book, The Japanese and Americans:

  Racist thinking, “Japanese → whale killer → bad people”, has now spread to children.

At the same time, why do “wildlife conservationists” turn a blind eye to the slaughter of cows and pigs but oppose whale hunting? As shown in Chapter 3, the recent whale hunting ban has led to a significant decline in walleye pollacks, Pacific sauries, and squid—all because there are more whales. Saving whales does nothing for “resource security”.

   Eating whales, compared to beef, is more ecologically friendly. Consider the following:

  *To obtain 1 kcal of whale: 1 kcal of fuel is needed.

  *To obtain 1 kcal of beef: 120 kcal of grain is needed.

  *To produce 1 kcal of grain (wheat): 10 kcal of fuel is needed.

  Thus, to obtain 1 kcal of beef, 1200 kcal of fuel is needed: whale meat is 1,200 times more ecologically efficient than beef.
